The objectives of this experiment were to estimate the endogenous excretion of purine derivatives (PD), the intake and digestibility of nutrients, the urinary excretion of PD from the intake of total digestible nutrients (TDN) and digestible organic matter (DOM) in Nellore heifers. Eight heifers, 267±17 kg body weight (BW), were assigned to two 4 × 4 latin squares. The planned treatments were four dry matter intake (DMI) levels: 10, 14, 18 and 22 g/kg BW. The diet contained 70% corn silage and 30% concentrate. The endogenous losses were obtained by regression between excretion of PD (mmol/BW0.75) and DMI (g/BW0.75). When PD excretion (mmol/d) was related to the intake of DOM and TDN (kg/d), the following equations were obtained: ŶPD= 32.98 + 21.94*DOM and... |

The objectives were to identify the distribution channels, to characterize the Agents involved, as well as its role in marketing of cattle for slaughter in the Papaloapan´s region of Veracruz. Five sources of information were used: Producers, Introducers, Municipal slaughter house, Butcher and Consumers all groups were surveyed. The study was carried at seven municipalities, which are the largest cattle stock in the region (63,6%). Program SAS (2003) was utilized to calculate measures of central tendency, dispersion, frequencies and contingency tables between agents. Producers were the most agest (53 ±13 years old) and more experienced in the activity (24±14 years) group. The Introducers had the highest level of study (8±5 years) and years of service of... |

The problem to investigate is the permanent disequilibrium of Mexican commercial balance of cattle heads and meat regarding United States during the period 1993-2007. The objective is shows that the inequality productive structure on cattle heads and meat that exists between Mexico and American Union, through commercial exchange of those products impact the commercial balance. The methodology used was the consult of international trade and productive aspects of cattle to both countries and the use of structuralism economic theory for the information analysis. The results obtained shows that the inequality structure between both nations (United States as centre and Mexico as periphery) on items such as herd size; integration to meat industry; meat... |

Infectious abortion is a significant cause of reproductive failure and economic losses in cattle. The goal of this study was to detect nucleic acids of several infectious agents known to cause abortion including Arcanobacterium pyogenes, Bovine Herpesvirus 1, Brucella abortus, Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis, Chlamydophila abortus, Leptospira sp., Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella sp., Mycoplasma bovis, Mycoplasma bovigenitalium, Neospora caninum, and Tritrichomonas foetus. Tissue homogenates from 42 fetuses and paraffin-embedded tissues from 28 fetuses and 14 placentas/endometrium were included in this study. Brucella abortus was detected in 14.2% (12/84) of the samples. Salmonella sp. DNA was amplified from 2 fetuses, and there was one positive... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of the dietary cation-anion balance (DCAB) on the calcium metabolism in male Nellore steers with a mean age of 10 months. Three experimental diets were tested: a cationic diet, a diet consisting of Tifton hay only, and an anionic diet with +15.2, +23.9 and −10.0 mEq/100 g DM of DCAB values in the diet. The anionic diet was calculated as the addition of salts of ammonium chloride and magnesium sulfate. Based on the isotope dilution technique, the negative DCAB value used in this study (−10.0 mEq/100 g DM) does not affect calcium metabolism, especially endogenous losses and true absorption. |

Estes centros recebem, constantemente, significativo fluxo migratorio rural-rural, oriundo, sobretudo, do sul do Pais e dispoe de... |

Twelve yearling Girolando, rumen-fistulated steers never fed with urea before, were distributed randomly in 2 groups of 6 animals each. Both groups were administered intraruminally a single dose (0.5 g/kg BW) of extruded (G1) or prilled (G2) urea to induce ammonia poisoning. The clinical picture was followed for the next 240 min. Besides the classic signs the present study found 3 new additional sign: dehydration, hypothermia and ingurgitated episcleral veins. Convulsion, considered the definite sign, was seen in 5 out of 6 animals from both groups. One steer (G1) had only fasciculation, while another (G2) developed typical clinical signs, but not convulsion, and recovered spontaneously without treatment. The appearance of clinical signs such as muscle... |

Cow-herd standardized performance analysis (SPA) data for Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico were used to determine economic factors affecting cow-herd costs, production, and profitability. Total cost was defined as the financial cost associated with raising a calf through the weaning stage; production, as pounds weaned per exposed female; and profits, as a rate of return on assets. Variable affecting one of more performance measures included herd size; pounds of feed fed; real estate, machinery, and breeding-stock investments; calving percentage; death loss; and breeding-season length. Management variables were especially important for financial costs and profitability of the cow-herd operation. |

Anaplasma marginale has been detected in the Philippines only by peripheral blood smear examination and serological methods. This study generally aimed to molecularly detect and characterize A. marginale in cattle and ticks in Cebu, Philippines. A total of 12 bovine blood samples and 60 Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus ticks were collected on the Cebu Island in 2011. 16S rRNA-based screening-PCR and DNA sequencing revealed 8 cattle (66.7%) and 8 ticks (13.3%) to be positive for A. marginale, and 1 tick (1.7%) to be positive for A. centrale. Selected positive DNA samples were further characterized based on 16S rRNA (longer sequence), Msp5, Msp1α,gltA and groEL genes for phylogenetic analyses. Sequence identities of partial DNA fragments of A. marginale... |
